August Soul Stories, Gemstones, and Jewelry
And just like that it's Sept. 1st! The leaves are dotting with yellow and their musical rustling has taken a drier tone. I found myself resistant to this ever-changing reality — every moment dragging us into the next, nothing standing still. And like our new puppy, who sits in protest against the leash, bracing with her front paws, I was bracing against change, against time, only to feel my inner world becoming more tumultuous. So the key to this month is surrender. And as soon as I embody the meaning of that word, I find myself reconnecting with the subtle magic of the universe. A mighty elk visiting again and again reminding me to stand strong in this independent endeavor; a doe and her baby living on our property reminding me to approach life without judgment, with gentleness and acceptance; the full moon rising on the horizon reminding me that time passes whether I like it or not; chasing a seagull feather falling from the sky to be reminded of the message within Jonathan Livingston Seagull, a gift from my best philosophy professor; and taking in the words of my son's friend as he proclaimed that I must be a magical being because rain started right after I offhandedly mentioned rain.
The lesson of these last couple months is that when life gets busy with the everyday coordination and to-dos, it can be easy to lose sight of the small things, the synchronicities, the subtleties, and the magic of the universe starts to feel far away, nonexistent, and forgotten. It can feel like we're getting swept along, waves crashing over our heads. So I'd love to invite you this upcoming month to surrender to time and change, notice what you can take from life's everyday moments, and like the falling of the leaves (and the seagull feather), let go of anything that you no longer need with gratitude.
Mic and I used to say we are all nebulous blobs of continuous change, and therein, lies a certain kind of freedom to just be whoever we are in the moment and let go of expectations, as a dear friend helped remind me of this month. And there's nothing like having a puppy to lock in these concepts, because if you're expecting too much from a puppy, you're in for a world of frustration.

A historic practice was to collect all twelve "birthstones" to rotate through each month to harness their symbolic and healing powers. I like this idea, because personally I'm not too attached to the concept of birthstones — I'd rather you have a stone that speaks to you outside of limitations and meets you where you are!
